Many of my PC groups have made their way to the first layer of the Nine Hells. Infernal history tells that Bel, ruler of the first defeated Zariel to take control. I imagined an epic battle between two huge fiends that was so great it changed the geography of Avernus, and when the dust cleared, the defeated was left in a shallow grave. The colossal corpse of Zariel is seen in the image below. The fiend is buried under a pile the size of a small hill. It is rumored that there is a portal back to Manual of the Planes and Fiendish Codex II: Tyrants of the Nine Hells.
I used an image from the mars rover to give an idea of what the first layer of Hell looks like (below). It is a little different than the common “Dante’s Inferno” imagery most think of. I then added a bit of random rough weather from Weathermaster to spice things up. I keep the fiends away or at decent ECL. The fiends are more interested in recruiting planar travelers for the blood war than beating up folks.
