Daughters of Delarendel

Basically, the dragon Surma has allies called the Daughters of Delarendel. They are the eyes and ears of the dragon, and are dragon blooded eladrin – called caimen eladrin by some. They are all female. Who are they? Well, Delarandel is the name of a sole leshay (Epic handbook) that stayed with Surma after the great ascension of their god Alidor.

A tablet written in the language of the ancient fey, found near Melbrindar Keep on the continent of Jerren, read:

“On the day when the name of our god is spoken in unison in our hearts and souls, we shall ascend into the heavens and become one with the divine essence for forever and eternity.”

Delarendel was one of many Leshay that missed the boat. She stayed with Surma, Alidor’s loyal mount. Surma laid two eggs the day of the ascension. Nine months later Delarendel gave birth to a daughter, named Vega. Vega and the two young dragons grew up together. One day, one of the dragons killed the leshay child in a spiteful rage. Surma banished the dragon to the Nine Hells (Manual of the Planes).

Surma seeing her companion for so many millennia stricken with grief by the death of her only child, willed into existence a replacement daughter -a caimen eladrin of coarse. The replacement did not go over well with Delarendel who promptly left the dragon’s lair for the mainland of what would one day be called Jelling. Angry and confused Surma continued to will more eladrin into existence hoping to appease Delarendel, but it was to no avail. Around this time, Surma’s other child set his sights on enlightenment and left for the Seven Heavens (Manual of the Planes). The loss of her first two offspring, and her good friend Delarendel, made the ancient beast sad, but before she could drop into an unrecoverable murk, she started laying eggs again. The laying of eggs improved the dragon’s mood  and to this day, Surma still lays eggs, dozens at a time. The caimen eladrin are tasked with removing the dragon eggs from the island. Surma chose to have her eggs removed to protect the Daughters of Delarendel from dragon attack, that is also why there is only one dragon on the island of Jelling. Unfortunately, it was the abandonment of the dragon eggs that lead to the first war between the orphaned dragons of the world and the remaining leshay. What few leshay that survived took refuge in the Galleywein Forest on the island of the dragon, now called Jelling. The refugees stayed for about two millennia before abandoning the forest to create the Empire of Taluo across the sea.

The caimen eladrin stayed with Surma, and became protectors of what is now Jelling along with their dragonborn children. More recently, they have acted as negotiators for peace between the dragon of the island and the elves, dwarves and humans that came and colonized what is now known as the Island Nation of Jelling.

New moon rituals of the Daughters of Delarendel
Since Surma does not allow dragons on her island; not even her own children, about every six months or so, when the moons are new, the Daughters of Delarendel gather up the eggs laid by Surma, and toss them into the Winwell Sea. The currents take the eggs and deposit them on beaches throughout the world.
