Living in the shadow of a dragon
In Jelling there is only one dragon, Surma. The dragon only asks for one tribute a year and the items it requests for are usually easy to acquire. Since no other dragon would dare enter Surma’s territory, the people of the island have spent the time most others would have used for planning for the next dragon attack on somewhat refined civil pursuits. For instance the King of Noth Point allows peasants to own land and has even set up programs for educating the poor. In the south Schools of philosophy and astrology have opened and theatre is quite popular. Sure Surma could come down from the lake and eat any town at any time, but she has not. Most of the islands inhabitants feel that if a town was eaten by Surma then it most-likely deserved it.
Dragon Quests
Each year in the spring when both moons are new the dragon delivers a list to each and every settlement on the island of Jelling. Each town then has until the next two new moons to find and delver the items to the dragon. Failure to deliver can result in whole villages being eaten. A few years back a town called Gillian’s rest did not make the dragon’s deadline and the entire population was eaten and all the dwellings leveled.
