[...] That is the coolest thing about DMing, you get to use old players PCs as NPCs when the game ends. The bonus is that you get to see the character actually interact in-game prior to it becoming a NPC, and therefore know the history behind why they behave the way they do. This helps out imensly with next dungeon group making it a little easier when a new party of PCs needs help from a NPC and the story requires some background. Something like: “You go to the inn and over in the corner is the dragonborn you were told to meet, you can tell it is the right guy, because of the ghastly scars on his left arm look just like what the caimen warlock you met in Yatton said they would look like. He is definitely George Fiendslayer Knight of Jelling. He is drinking ale and gazing off deep in thought. Remember to get him to open up about the ruins you should offer him some blackberry taffy.” George defeated the summoned chicken fiend (final Blow) and was given the title Knight by the Queen of Jelling and a plot of land near Brendon Mill where he did most of his adventuring before retirement. The scars on his arm are from the Fiend. The caimen warlock is my wife’s old character she chose to live in Yatton. [...]
