I saw all the banners on RPGbloggers so I decided to sit down and make one. Here my top two:
The symbol on the left is part of my push to develop heraldry for cities and places in my world. The image represents the Tortoise City of Tudd, home of Ian Russerson. Tudd was one my first tortoise cities and Ian Russerson was its first inhabitant. I dug the image out of notes from my old Milwaukee games when 3.0 first came out. My players in Brew-town never made it to Tudd, I changed jobs and I moved to Tallahassee before they even discovered the wandering behemoths (they had a terrible time with ogres and orcs in North Western Jelling and never left the Island). Funny thing is the players I picked up in Tallahassee never made it to Tudd either. In 5 years of gaming they bounced back and forth between Elwonna, Ingersol and Morgan and made many trips to cities in Kirkland and Jelling, but never to Tudd, go figure you spend all your time developing one spot and no one visits it. I ended up using parts and pieces of Tudd to fill in gaps in the game on the fly so all the hard work did pay off eventually.
In most cases, players don’t need a lot of detail about the environment outside the dungeon, so I usually quick scribble up some heraldry on the spot. The image I used for Tudd became a template for the other tortoises. When asked about Ingersol, I used the same turtle image, but drew a lightning bolt in the center, and when it came time to dress up Morgan’s dwarves, I changed it to a war hammer. I’ll have to post those later.
