They people over on Troll and Flame made an excellent post on fantasy game currency. I wanted to comment on it, but I was unable to. There did not seem to be a way for someone not connected to social networking sites like Google, WordPress, TypePad, AIM, whatever… to post a comment. I really wanted to comment on what great job they did, so here it is below.
The post was titled Gold and Glory, but Mostly Gold. The link is here. Most settlements in my home game have their own coin emblems. The added twist is that foreign coinage needs to be exchanged, this ends up being a tax on the players money. It also adds some fun roll playing opportunities as they search for ways to keep their money without having to pay the “tax”. One group of players befriended a specific money changer in one town, and ended up getting discounts because of all the business the party brought him. Thanks Troll and Flame for the ideas. Coins from the dreaded frog empire –very cool!
I also have coin collector NPCs who will actually pay more for ancient coins, which in one game made a player really happy about that coin he found at the bottom of a pit trap that earned him 500gp from the queen’s archeological society in Jelling.

I am the people. Sorry about you not being able to post. I was not aware it was restricted and just changed (hopefully) the setting that will allow anyone to comment.
Thanks for the compliments. The money exchange “Tax” is also a reason I like to use different coinage systems.
If you’re into this stuff I reccommend looking up “roman coins” “greek coins” on Wikipedia and following the links until you get too sleepy.
I dig your favicon.
@njharman
Thanks. I do the google untill I can google no more often while building stuff for my game. The favicon was clipped from a googled image from a Z-brush 3D artist. Some day I have to redo it to make it my own. I emailed the artist but never heard back from him. Later this summer I plan to write more about it. Oh, and your site has some real cool stuff on it. Keep it up.
