Weapons of the Gods

In the past, in my home game, players could choose gods from any book they own. I have always done this. Recently, I have been updating the gods of Alidor, and some of my players asked about the weapons of the gods. In the 3.5e of my game I allow players to pick their deity’s weapon, if they did not like the default one found in the core rules. The only exception where the tortoises of Alidor; these beasts being neutral, and of my own creation, I had to “market them” to the players saying they could choose anything to be their focus and weapon, but once a player made the choice, it was permanent for the PC’s career. This went over well. Unfortunatley, in 3e this made a lot of Travel/War clerics of this tortoise city or that, because players always look to benefit their PC’s. In 4e, I depreciated this rule and players could only choose from Core books and tortoises were off limits to the players as deities.

In my new incarnation of Alidor, the gods tend to not use weapons and leave such petty decisions to the mortals to fight over. So as I build basic descriptions of the gods of Alidor, I will leave out information about weapons. As a DM, I don’t care what weapon a player uses for their deity. I let the PC create one and describe why it is used over any other. I believe this helps the player build a history for her character. Once they decide, I do have a table vote by all at the table to allow the weapon choice in game. I have decided to allow the players total control over what they believe the weapon of their god is.

As begin to deviate away from 4e, I am making my own gods for Alidor and I will begin to allow only these gods in the game.
