You know something bad is going to happen when the DM asks for a list of the gear that your player character has. Rarely does anything good come out of such a request and this last Tuesday we found out the hard way in our 3.5e group.
All summer we played happily along in Keoland fighting through some tough modules making it to level 9 on average, and never once did the DM say hey before the next game I need a list of your PC’s gear. Our luck ran out and he finally asked us, and we all obliged him and passed on a list. We were no more than twenty minutes into the dungeon and bam some beastie surprised us (of coarse) and four out of 6 of the party, spent the next twenty minutes making saving throws for our hard earned magic gear of which we lost 90%. My wife the dwarf barbarian with an adamantine dwarven waraxe (big bucks BTW) and other cool gear was reduced to just two mundane daggers and her ever-full mug to fight the monster that destroyed her gear. She raged at the DM and the monster.
It was a sonic attack. So we keyed in and threw up silence spells to nerfed the beast’s ability but the damage was already done. So be warned it is a bad Omen when the DM wants to know what gear you have before your next game…

So did the master get schooled by a student? Just wondering. BTW, I’m trying REALLY hard not to laugh but I can’t help it.
At least you have SOME gear left. When we played, you didn’t even need to ask us for a list. Everything you have… …GONE!
Hah! No the DM doesn’t play “home games” he is a strict RPGA gamer from NY that refuses 4e out of principle. He’s running a collection of 3.5e games from NY (Keoland) for us that he played and ran before moving here.
I think you are referencing when you guys went through portals without the proper key (inspired by Planescape). In most cases you were not in immediate danger when you lost your gear, on Tuesday we were in a dark passage with a huge modified lizard beast just out of visual range. Our problem is that money is limited in the game, so it will take another 3-5 modules (sessions) for my wife to get enough money to by a +1 adamantine axe again. In my home game you would be up and running with new gear in one, maybe two sessions. RPGA is not forgiving especially the 3.5 version. This guy is definitely schooling us, rigidly and by the book.
