Tomb of Horrors Update

I believe my tricks worked. The party was in a much better mood by the time we stopped yesterday. The easy button was a hit, no one tapped it, but a couple times they grabbed for it like when I dropped two 18th level characters deep in to the negatives in two rounds with only divine magic holding them back from death, and then there was that meteor storm… Actually they all had fun and even though I put the button out and said they could tap it and the game would be over and they would get their gear back but would never be allowed to play the ToH at my table. They all said they were having too much fun at my table to hit the easy button. Little do they know they have just gotten to the toughest part of the game.
Here is an image of my setup. Because the Tom of Horrors is an iconic for this genre, I mixed up the ToH map on my Chessex Megamat (circa 1989) so players prone to meta-gaming have a hard time following from the memory of past games. Areas A and B are where I place PCs who pass through portals so they feel comfy. I also ask them to leave the room which adds stress to the players left behind until they see oh they just went to area B a 20ft by 20ft room (meta-game trap). In reality they most likely died or got ejected or actually did make it to a new part of the dungeon. They will not know the result unless they can somehow communicate across the planes. Yep the ToH I am using is actually a mini planes hopping adventure which adds to the challenge for 18th level PCs in 3.5e Dungeons & Dragons.
I saved up and bought the battle mat around 1989 and it was the best game purchase I ever made. The Apple computer and iPhone not so much… The table seats 8 and we got it for free from relatives.
We play again in two weeks.
