Tomb of Horrors Crescendo

Tonight my high level group of seven PCs step back into the trap packed Tomb of Horrors. The tension inside the tomb is definitely rising. They chose to rest after nearly losing half the party which forced them to give up some very important buffs that could only be had with their original gear which is now owned by the ToH. I really can’t give too much away, but man, the final quarter of rooms in the dungeon are absolutely the toughest especially if you no longer have all that cool gear you started with.

green devil from Tomb of Horrors module

One player mentioned his PC had focused all his skills around his one weapon for the last 18 levels and now he no longer has it. Of course this is motivation enough for him to venture forth. Another mentioned that his PC never gets hit in combat and has been painfully bloody throughout this whole module he too presses on to get back his gear. All the players have lost focus on why they went into the tomb. the ToH can do that to parties. They all now why they went in, it is just no longer their primary purpose. At the beginning of the last game session, I asked for a review of what went on previously. I got the “we went this way and almost died then that and found a trap” response. I asked why then are they are in the ToH? They all said in unison “to get their stuff back.”

The Easy Button for Tomb of Horrors

I will have the easy button out again. If they tap it I will end the game and they will get their gear back, but I will not run the game again for those PCs. I think I lightened up on the I will never run it for the actual players again.

nackle gnomes

Someone in an earlier post about the easy button asked how do they get their gear back? My answer is a band of Nackle gnomes venture forth into the dungeon and recover the gear. The party will get their equipment back only if they spend a month listening to the Nackles as they describe their foray into the tomb in extreme Nackle detail. I believe that will be torture enough for the group. Bested by Nackles. Hah!

    So how did it go?

The guy who convinced everyone to play the ToH was sick so we played another game set in Keoland. We are hoping to Play Monday. It would not be fair to play it without all players present and it is definitely not the kind of game where you let someone run your character.

I spent two game sessions deciding on a cohort (3.5e) and it died in the mod.
