Completed the Tomb of Horrors

Tonight we completed the Tomb of Horrors module adapted by Stephen Conforti titled Horrors Never Die: Return to the Tomb. I ran it for five players and two cohorts at an average party level of 18. In the end the party hit the easy button once the combat was going their way. I had killed three party members. One was permanently killed, but we agreed to change the his character’s condition to trapped and the party will go on a special mission to save him. He had the PC for five years and it seemed fitting to give his character another chance.

We could have dragged the combat out over two more sessions, but we all agreed to stop. The tomb had done its job and stressed and tested the groups mettle. Everyone had fun, even the guy who lost his character to the void. His eyes lit up with all kinds of ideas for creating an adventure to rescue his character. Honestly that is a sign of a good dungeon when at the end, people are inspired with ideas that lead off to other adventures.

The dungeon crawl started in September and lasted all the way to tonight. Now we have one more set of dungeons to go through to complete the story arc and also save a fallen comrade.

The one spell that saved the day for the party was the 6th level spell: antimagic field. The player said it has saved his character’s butt on numerous occasions and it worked well in the ToH. Another player had a wand of shatter he bought and had never used 4 years ago. His wand came in handy as they desperately scrambled to try anything they could to defeat the monster of the tomb.
