Vesna Gable the Witch of Kingleaf

Vesna is a local of Kingleaf. She was found unconscious in a cranberry bog northeast of town. The Gables, cranberry farmers who managed the bog where she was found, took her in as a third addition to their small family. She stayed with the family until see reached the age of 18, then she moved into town and began work as barmaid at the Cat and the King Inn. Always curious and gifted with arcane skill, the locals consider her both a blessing and a curse. Her red hair hints to her true caimen heritage, that heritage means she is linked to a dragon and in Jelling that means Surma. Most go out of their way to make her life in Kingleaf comfortable offering her food, clothing and coin, believing that if Vesna is well cared for and happy, then the great dragon Surma is happy, and if Surma is happy, then the people in town have little to fear. If something bad were to happen to the caimen woman, well, relations with Surma may get ugly.

Vesna has been known to give away these gifts to those more needy than her, keeping only what she requires for her minimal living requirements. Her adopted family visits from time to time otherwise she keeps to herself. When not at work, she can be found out in the countryside picking mushrooms and herbs and various other oddities for use with spells. Her brothers Otto, and Darin Gable often help her on these excursions when they get some free time away from their duties on the cranberry farm.

Vesna is one of the NPCs I am fleshing out for my Wolf’s Tomb game I am running at Winter War this year. I try to have three NPCs at the ready for the party to interact with in any town. The usual suspects in any “in town game” are the innkeeper, the local law enforcement representative and a priest. I don’t usually stat out these NPCs and leave most of their development open to the player’s imagination. Vesna and her brothers have plot hooks for the party as the game develops.
