Word of the Week: DEFENESTRATE

Defenestrate is to throw a person or thing out of a window. I find it odd that there is a word that has this meaning. The practice of throwing people out of windows was so common that they had to come up with a word to describe it. But I do have to admit I love the blow-em up action packed movies which have at least one scene where some one is defenestrated. The most recent movie I saw with a defenestration would have to be “Transformers: Dark of the Mooon. Laserbeak (a vulture decepticon) defenestrates Mr. Wang. I love Bruce Brazos’ (John Malkovich) response … “Someone get legal!”.

As I understand it, the word came about not because it was common practice, but rather because of an infamous example of it. In 1618, a couple of nobles were thrown out a castle window, which sparked the 30 Years War.

Why they called it the 30 Years War, I don’t know. Seems like a self-fulfillilng prophecy to me. ;)

That would do it, too! Thanks for your added wisdom!
