Small LFR con in Orlando FL July 4th

Well things are calming down from my move. Today, I took a peek at Warhorn and saw that there is a small LFR con going on in Orlando on the 4th of July. Too bad it is LFR, otherwise, I would go. I kinda sold all my 4e gear.

The con is sponsored by a game store in Winter Park, FL called Cool Stuff Games. I may stop bye this weekend, if I can sneak away from family activities. I still have not explored the gaming seen much around here, from what I read, this place sounds cool. They are running the The Paladins’ Plague series H1-H3 and P1. It sounds like a fun battle interactive set in Elturel in the Forgotten Realms.

Three Best Game Stores in Central Illinois

A comment on my moving to Florida post yesterday got me thinking about the game stores I have frequented the most while living here in Central Illinois. All three offer gaming in the store which is really how I found them. I’ll miss the Armored Gopher the most since it is the local shop here in town. Dave the owner, helped me with setting up for my first convention where I ran my own game using pathfinder rules. I had a blast playing games hosted there. The other two shops, Capital City Games and Gryfalia’s Aerie have offered World Wide Game Day events and RPGA events over the years, and have always been great hosts. I’ll miss traveling to them also.

The honorable mention is Justforfun Games in Peoria, one of the players that visited my house here in Urbana runs games hosted at JFF, the guy is a pretty good GM, so I thought I would mention his haunt too, even though I have never been to Peoria.

Pathfinder in Missouri

This weekend Saturday, May 1st and Sunday, May 2nd at the Osage Community Center in Cape Girardeau, MO, Cape Comic Con is running. I checked Warhorn and they have a full slot of Pathfinder Society games running both days. So if you are looking to try Pathfinder and you are in the Midwest check out this small convention.

Instead of a mini in your next combat try these

Miniatures have always been an integral part of gaming no matter what roleplaying game system you use. As a GM, people seem to expect you to have a mini to represent every monster or NPC in the dungeon. I personally don’t like this, and financially can’t keep pace with such expectations. My solution is that the players at my table have to have their own mini representing their PC and any animal or cohort they have. I do have a few minis I use for combat, but these rarely end up representing the true opponent to the party, instead it is a place holder, and I ask the players to “imagine” the bald monk mini to actually be a horned devil. Pathfinder, 3.5e and 4e games all have complicated tactics for battle, and sometimes there are tons of monsters that need to be placed. When I run such encounters, I tend to break everything down to the basics and use glass beads, plastic magnets, cut pieces of paper and candy to represent the monster combatants.

The coolest thing about plastic magnets is that you can write numbers on them and track the bad guys during combat by number; I use wet erase markers for this. The glass beads work great for minions and groups of easy targets. The glass beads I like are from Chessex, and come in packs of 25, so when you have a group of 15 kobolds attacking the party from the left and a group of 12 orcs coming from the right you can set up purple glass beads for kobolds and green for orcs, while the Horned devil (bald monk) commands the red wizard (red magnet) orange priest (orange magnet) grey thief (grey magnet) and the white witch (white magnet) to attack the party without prejudice. Such a battle can be easily set up in minutes without having to search for the right mini for this beast and that.

Using very basic figures help to keep the action going during the game. They reduce setup time and are easy to track. I have even used rocks from my driveway. The players don’t mind, they just need to know where the enemy is so they can attack them. As a bonus, I find generic markers like these end up being very easy to pack for travel to conventions.

Winter War and Alidor

Hi all, I am running three games this weekend at Winter War. I will be bringing the pre-generated characters that the PF Society use. I will allow players to update these before the games start. They can also bring one of their own, if you follow the PF society character generation guidelines or at minimum the ones I state on my website under Game Info.

The games are focused on fun and learning the rules for Pathfinder and fun. Hope to se you there.

Friday Afternoon
The Wolf’s Tomb –Digging a new well in town of Kingleaf has lead to tragedy. An adventure set in the World of Alidor. Characters will be provided. Pathfinder RPG rules. Some gaming experience preferred.
Saturday Afternoon
Rathkip’s Stinking Den –Help a caravan master recover goods stolen on the frontier. An adventure set in the World of Alidor. Characters will be provided. Pathfinder RPG rules. Some experience with specific game assumed.
Saturday Evening
The Lair of Inescapable Doom –In the Village of Ingersol, no one approaches the old Willerson manor. Stories of ghosts and evil spirits within the home keep the locals fearful and on edge. On his deathbed, old man Willerson willed the estate to the church of Yol. Now the church needs help claiming their inheritance. An adventure set in the World of Alidor. Characters will be provided. Pathfinder RPG rules. Some experience with specific game assumed.
