The caves on Yates Hill were once controlled by the Mokosha dwarf clan of Jelling. The proximity of the caves to the burnt out, and abandoned Yates Manor made it increasingly difficult for the clan to continue to maintain. They gave up on the caves several winters ago. Rumors of vampires, and foul beasts roaming near the caves, and the old ruins were enough to keep locals from getting too close. There has been some activity of late in the area of the caves, strange noises and lights at night have made travel to and from Four Wells to Brendon Mill a bit unnerving. The images below show the caves looking up from old ridge trail and looking down from the main cave towards the ruins of Yates Manor.

In my home game, set in Alidor, this is my version of the Caves of Chaos.

Many of my PC groups have made their way to the first layer of the Nine Hells. Infernal history tells that Bel, ruler of the first defeated Zariel to take control. I imagined an epic battle between two huge fiends that was so great it changed the geography of Avernus, and when the dust cleared, the defeated was left in a shallow grave. The colossal corpse of Zariel is seen in the image below. The fiend is buried under a pile the size of a small hill. It is rumored that there is a portal back to Manual of the Planes and Fiendish Codex II: Tyrants of the Nine Hells.

I used an image from the mars rover to give an idea of what the first layer of Hell looks like (below). It is a little different than the common “Dante’s Inferno” imagery most think of. I then added a bit of random rough weather from Weathermaster to spice things up. I keep the fiends away or at decent ECL. The fiends are more interested in recruiting planar travelers for the blood war than beating up folks.

In an attempt to keep Planescape alive in D&D 3.5, The World of Alidor is full of portals. One of the best places on the net to learn about Planescape is Mimmir.net. The site also has a great planar slang dictionary or planar cant.

Most games in Alidor are on the prime, but from time to time players can take side treks to the outer planes. The Planar Handbook & Manual of the Planes are used to help fill in details when games shift toward extra planar travel.
